Claire, I was in San Jose last weekend. There is VTA light rail that runs from the airport to within a block of the hotel. You'll take a short bus ride from the airport terminals to VTA. You could walk this part in a pinch.
If you're staying longer than the conference or arriving early, you might want to check out the Clipper Card, which works on many Bay Area and Silicon Valley transit systems, including BART, Muni and ferries. You just tag the card against a reader panel when you enter or leave the station, or get on or off the bus. They have a website.
