As you mention, the best advice will always be to use what your organization is most qualified to support based on skill sets and breadth of use across the company as a whole. However, here's some general info from data that BMC was able to collect.
Note that BMC does not formally track which operating systems and databases are in use by customers since BMC provides the same high level of support for all customers regardless of configuration. That said, based on the environments identified during BMC Support's interaction with customers, one can (very) roughly estimate the following approximate percentages across the BMC user base: Windows / SQL 40% Solaris / Oracle 25% Windows / Oracle 10% HP-UX / Oracle 7% AIX / DB2 5% AIX / Oracle 4% Red Hat / Oracle 3% Solaris / Sybase 2% As far as trends go, interest in Red Hat / Oracle is the fastest growing combination and BMC expects that configuration to be adopted by a larger percentage of customers looking forward. Also note that while Windows / SQL is the highest percentage, that is driven primarily by medium to small enterprises. Typically a large global enterprise will choose a UNIX operating system like Solaris, HP-UX or AIX - although there are examples of large enterprises running on Windows. This is all just general information and should not be interpreted as a recommendation on the part of BMC. Each customer situation is unique and such information should be used only as one data point in a larger decision. -David J. As in, what percentage of the customer base runs Windows/Linux/AIX/HPUX/Solaris? Any differences on level of support from BMC between the platforms? I know the easy answer is, use whichever platform your organization most readily supports. Problem is, this organization readily supports all of the above. I'm trying to make a case to move from Windows to Linux (DB is already on Linux), but mgmt wants justification for Linux vs. the rest. Hardware cost, while a huge differentiator, is a factor but unfortunately not enough. _______________________________________________________________________________ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org attend wwrug10 www.wwrug.com ARSlist: "Where the Answers Are" _______________________________________________________________________________ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org attend wwrug10 www.wwrug.com ARSlist: "Where the Answers Are"
