In my experience (testing only, quite a while ago) it should run fine if it was installed on SQL Server 2000 and then you upgrade SQL Server from 2000 to 2005. The ARS 6.3 installer is not able to create a new ARSystem database on a SQL Server 2005 instance, so I would not expect it to be able to do so on SQL Server 2008 either.
