It's expanding to it's UNIX time value. Which is about as useless as can be when your trying to compare it to a Date field (Julian Date)!
I really hope they agree to fix it in 7.0.1. This is a HUGE problem. We use $DATE$ in 100's of qualification throughout our Manage Faculty app that I built. Kind of explains why functions that supposedly had been tested and passed early last year are broken now.....
