I've also noticed the SLM 7.0.00, 7.0.01 and 7.0.02 InstallShield's bomb out
on a regular basis during my several practice and real SLM install
attempts. Was thinking it was just me or something screwy on our
development and production servers (Solaris 9 with Oracle 10gR2) as
sometimes it would complete without any problems. Restoring from backup
to "try" again is a big issue and something I shouldn't ever have to do!

The other issue with the SLM install has been with the ARIntegrations
installer. Except for the 7.0.00 release, the process that builds the
SLM:Measurements to HPD:HelpDesk join doesn't run and you have to manually
re-execute this process.

I'm amazed at how buggy the whole SLM install process has been as I don't
see these issues with the other ITSM apps.

I wonder if any of this has been reported to BMC? I also don't understand
why they don't just make a standard install script for SLM and be consistent
with the other apps. The same goes for the CMDB CIViewer InstallSheild!

Another thing about SLM is that its a installshield and not really an
install script (on unix) and it tends to bomb out during an install.. So its
a mighty good idea to take a backup of the database before attempting to
install it just for a good measure...

All other V7 apps use install scripts (on UNIX) so they are less buggier..

Subject: Warning ... SLM 7.0.2 install w/o collector - SOLUTION

Here's the solution (from support.) Guess I should have paid better
attention to the release notes. :-/ Granted, I have not yet tried
this... we'll see.

"There is an 'overwrite install option' in the release notes for SLM
7.0.02. This overwrite allows you to re-install SLM on top of an existing
install. Please check out page 11 and 12 of the SLM 7.0.02 release notes
(not the install guide) for details about the overwrite install. There
are some steps and post-install checks mentioned in that section. You can

use this to reinstall on your existing installation of SLM, and this time
around you can also select the collector option.

Also, when you do an overwrite, you will not lose any of your existing SLM

data or Service Targets that you've already created. Data does not get
deleted. You can retrieve the release notes for SLM 7.0.2 from the
supportweb > Downloads area."
