gnome-settings-daemon does not have anything to do with GConf (which uses
'gconfd-2') nor dconf ('dconf-service'). It manages session-wide settings, such
as display, power, or global keybindings.

The actions upon lid closing are part of GNOME's settings. In GNOME 3.1, power
management is done by the "power" plugin of gnome-settings-daemon.
