Yes, whenever you add an entry to apertium-en-es.en-es.dix, you have
to make sure the corresponding monolingual entries are in

As far as I know it isn't possible to add supplementary files.
The ideal thing if you are going to be adding a lot of vocabulary
is to add it to the monolingual dictionaries (as Mikel mentioned) and
convert the pair to a new-style language pair. Of course this is
likely to be quite a bit more work at the start, but will pay off in the
end
if you're planning to use Apertium for some time because you will
be able to take advantage of improvements to the English side
going on in the development of the Catalan--English pair.
