A while ago I had a laptop and a netbook, both running Fedora 14, with the same KDE and Amarok versions. One of them needed the vlc backend and the other needed the gstreamer backend (can't remember which was which). Only one backend worked with each. My advice, therefore, is install all three backends, and experiment to see which one works on your system.
