Hi Lee. FC1,FC2 needed audio, and usb_midi adding to the blacklist. FC3 seemed to set things up ok, without adding anything to the hotplug blacklist. All Fedora Core installs using Planetccrma stuff. Debian Sarge needed the two OSS modules adding to the blacklist. Slackware 10.0 using Audioslacks mm kernel set things up with no problems (no need for the blacklist). I can't quite remember the state of the Gentoo install, but do know that snd-usb-audio is NOT enabled in the genkernel, and had to recompile it to get it to work. It would appear that there are still problems for the config files of kernels in different distro's, which doesn't make it particularly easy for newcomers to Linux to set up their audio. I know FC1, and 2 are a bit old, but you have to add the 2 OSS modules to the hotplug blacklist, and add the options lines for soundcard first, and snd-usb-audio 2nd. FC3 seemed to be doing things better, and the soundcard and snd-usb-audio were set up in the correct order. Debian, I had to mess about with a bit. In fact even though the 2.4 kernel worked ok, I had to add mouse-dev, and psmouse to /etc/modules to get X up with the 2.6.8 kernel, and also uhci_hcd, without which snd-usb-audio would not work. As I already mentioned, Gentoo's genkernel does not have snd-usb-audio enabled, which is pathetic. I'd better leave off here, as I think I'm starting to rant. It would be nice though, if OSS is truly deprecated, for it to be removed from the kernels on all distro's. This would help to reduce a lot of problems.
