I'm at wit's end trying to get my Debian laptop running ALSA to make
any noise at all. Well, it makes the system beep sound just fine, but
nothing else.
To start with, when I run "aplay /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav", I get:
aplay: main:447: audio open error: No such file or directory
I'm running kernel 2.4.19 with packages 'alsa-modules-2.4.19-686',
'alsa-base', 'alsa-utils', 'alsa-xmms', and 'alsaconf' installed. I
followed the 'Installing and Configuring ALSA Sound Modules in Debian
HOWTO' on LinuxOrbit.com; I edited /etc/alsa/alsa-base.conf to set
startosslayer=true, and I edited /etc/modutils/alsa to configure my
sound layer properly. (I'm using a Dell Latitude CPi D266XT laptop
with a CS4237B chip in it, so I'm using the cs4236 driver.) I even
removed 'snd_' from the names of the modules to fix the 'option not
found' error messages.
So as far as I know I have everything all configured okay... but
obviously I don't!
I'm running a brand-new installation of Debian which I updated to
'testing' (sarge). The only significant thing I did to it was to
install KDE 3.1, but it's my understanding that arts isn't even
available for KDE 3.1 yet, so arts can't be getting in the way.
'lsmod' reports that modules 'snd' and 'sndcore' are loaded, but it
doesn't show any other sound-related modules.
I've scoured mailing lists and web sites and I can't find any clue why
this might not be working. I'm really frustrated with it by now and I
could use any tips anyone might have on how to fix it. And it's not
like this system could have a lot of cruft getting in the way and
fouling stuff up; like I said, it's a fresh Debian installation, and I
purposefully didn't install any other sound stuff because I didn't want
it to interfere with alsa.
Thanks in advance!
