Hi,

Since you're using RH7.3 you may want to try the rpms that are located at 
Planet CCRMA ( http://www-planetccrma.stanford.edu )
There you'll find a dedicated kernel, alsa (quite recent build) and lots of 
other stuff. Be sure to read the excellent instructions first!
