Do you have some pictures of all this Sterling?

We would like an all outdoor combined NID/ONT with snap in/out electronics for
the ONT.

But what we do right now is splice a pigtail LC on the drop cable that is
carried in a conduit to the NID box.
We have a splice tray screwed to the back inside of the NID box, and then
Velcro the ONT to the inside (Velcro fastened by a screw, just a long strip of
it to wrap around the ONE).

So our ONT choice is vendor agnostic and can be indoor/outdoor, but must be
able to stand the temp changes of course.

The Velcro sounds ghetto, but it makes replacement very easy in our scenario
and works well to hold whatever ONT so we can position ports and status screens
where we like etc.

The ONT is powered via POE and sometimes also outside nearby outlets in dual
format if it’s MDU.

On MDU where there is no outlet nearby, we use a second POE insert/picker so
two customers are powering the ONT simultaneously.
Usually give battery backup UPS to one of the MDU customers on POE as well.

SFH don’t care so much, it’s their problem if they don’t use a UPS to power the
ONT POE.
Some purchase a UPS for the POE and also for their router/wireless router (or
bring them together on the same UPS) so they have internet during a power
outage on their wireless devices at least.

Now I’m just rambling too…

Do you guys typically use an outdoor ONT or indoor? I see pros and cons.

If it's outdoor I assume it's POE powered and you just run CAT5 into the house,
correct?
And inside your NID enclosure I imagine you splice your drop cable into a
pigtail with a factory end. That seems like the simplest, cleanest way to me.

On the other hand, I'm finding at least some vendors (Alphion) who only sell
indoor ONT's. So in that case, I'm thinking the splice enclosure goes INSIDE
the house because you're splicing to an indoor tight buffered patch cable which
I run to the ONT.

On the third hand, if the NID enclosure is outdoors, then I need slack loops
big enough to bring the enclosure (or splice tray) inside a truck to work on
it, whereas I could splice in the customer's basement without an issue, so
maybe I only need 10' of slack down there.

I guess I'm dumping my thoughts so those of you with more experience can
criticize my wrong headed thinking and tell me what the right choices are
before I f*** this up.
