Wow. Running AC outside was not something I had seriously considered. What's an electrician charge for that typically? ------ Original Message ------ From: "Chuck McCown" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: 3/27/2017 4:52:38 PM Subject: Re: [AFMUG] FTTH install practices Almost totally outdoor. But this is with DSL conversions mostly. The CAT5 already exists to the outside of the home. Also, when we have taken the fiber indoors, there have been a few times it got cut by satellite installers and others. Much more of a problem. We put a cyber power unit on the outside of the house. Pay an electrician to get power to it, generally from the power entrance. Not POE powered. That would be a very good wrinkle. The main problem is the 11-16 volt requirement of the ONT. That takes a half amp and may be a problem with several ohms of CAT5. I did do one for fun with my poe inserters. Perhaps that could be a new product.... hmmmm. Will run some numbers... If this is greenfield, I might go indoor. If it's outdoor I assume it's POE powered and you just run CAT5 into the house, correct? And inside your NID enclosure I imagine you splice your drop cable into a pigtail with a factory end. That seems like the simplest, cleanest way to me. On the other hand, I'm finding at least some vendors (Alphion) who only sell indoor ONT's. So in that case, I'm thinking the splice enclosure goes INSIDE the house because you're splicing to an indoor tight buffered patch cable which I run to the ONT. On the third hand, if the NID enclosure is outdoors, then I need slack loops big enough to bring the enclosure (or splice tray) inside a truck to work on it, whereas I could splice in the customer's basement without an issue, so maybe I only need 10' of slack down there. I guess I'm dumping my thoughts so those of you with more experience can criticize my wrong headed thinking and tell me what the right choices are before I f*** this up.
