I remember a line of Oregon State police clearing a bunch of protesting hippies in the 1960s by busting heads.  National guard at Kent state.  Those days were much worse.

I haven’t read the NY Times for something like 10 years, but I remember Nicholas Kristof as living in rural Oregon outside Portland, although his reporting was mainly international.  (Each year he has a contest for a college student to accompany him on a reporting trip to the developing world.)

 

So I did a quick search to see if he has said anything about Portland, what I came up with is this interview from 4 years ago.  Kind of interesting if you have 20 minutes.
