By the way, what is this ZMQ_RCVTIMEO option? I've been using it. I also
remembered that I have my own keepalive mechanism based on bit flags in
the data I'm transmitting through 0MQ. Do these methods offer any
detection mechanisms for disconnects/connection failures?

It seems to suggest that socket monitor is only available for pair
type connections. Is that right? I'm using publish-subscribe.
