Hi Peter, have a look at dafka (https://github.com/zeromq/dafka). It sounds like that could be a fit for you use case. There's also a Java port ( https://github.com/zeromq/jdafka).
The implementation that takes care of joining and leaving publishers and subscribers can be found in the tower and beacon classes in case you're interested.
