I'm having trouble with nvidia-auto-select apparently overriding my settings in xorg.conf.
I used nvidia-settings to set my resolution to 1920x1080 and saved the file
successfully to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I confirmed that the desired
resolution is in that file, but upon reboot it isn't getting used. I
reviewed
/var/log/Xorg.0.log which claims it is using my xorg.conf:
[13.773] (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
and even claims to be using my resolution specified in that config file
[14.000] (**) NVIDIA(0): Option "MetaModes" "1920x1080 +0+0
{viewportout=1850x1040+35+19}"
...
[14.602] (II) NVIDIA(0): Validated MetaModes:
[14.602] (II) NVIDIA(0): "1920x1080+0+0{viewportout=
1850x1040+35+19}"
[14.602] (II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1850 x
1040
...
[14.624] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1920x1080+0+0{viewportout=
1850x1040+35+19}"
Yet, further down in the log I see
[16.472] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "HDMI-0: nvidia-auto-select
@3770x2120 +0+0 {ViewPortIn=3770x2120, ViewPortOut=3770x2120+35+19}"
which I assume is overriding my xorg.conf setting.
I checked all the following locations and only found /etc/X11/xorg.conf
which is the one I created via nvidia-settings:
/etc/X11/<cmdline>
/usr/etc/X11/<cmdline>
/etc/X11/$XORGCONFIG
/usr/etc/X11/$XORGCONFIG
/etc/X11/xorg.conf # found
/etc/xorg.conf
/usr/etc/X11/xorg.conf.<hostname>
/usr/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.<hostname>
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf
How do I determine where the override is coming from?
I'm running Ubuntu 16.04.3, nVidia 384.111, kernel 4.4. Xorg.0.log is
attached.
