That did it.
A 'yum update' updated a bunch of things but among them was Xext  A 'make -B' 
and the program is working again.

Pretty sure this was caused by a patch we were carrying in
libXext-1.1-2, which was reverted in libXext-1.1.2-1.  So, update
libXext and you should be set.
