Well if that's a notebook lvds panel, those don't come with scalers,
hence the graphic chip does this. It may be adjustable with something
like xrandr --output LVDS --set scale full or something like that. I
agree though it's better to use native resolution (or one which at least
has the same aspect ratio) if you don't want black bars.
