That combination should work just fine. I've used a handful of radeon cards on FreeBSD/amd64. The driver that FreeBSD attaches to your video card (vga) is completely independent of Xorg and should have absolutely nothing to do with your problems. Without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, simply try starting X and show us the resulting log file that is generated.
