Okay, for posterity, I found the bug that I had commented on. I have several comments on it. (Starting with http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17638#c24 )
FWIW, now, with a vanilla xorg.conf, I still have related black-screen problems, but they only last a second or so. I'm not saying this is related to your issue, I was just trying to recall what problem I'd been having, as had originally thought it might be related, before I found the ticket.
