Anyone got any ideas on how to help this guy and locate the problem?

Is there some useful debug code I can add to the driver to help detect
the issues?

Alternatively, when is the next mesa likely to be released as if it's
going to be in the same kind of timescales as xserver 1.6 then perhaps I
can create some packages from master to see if it's just fixed by
general upstream dev since the snapshot.

That said as my package is pretty similar to the fedora one (last time I
looked), I'd be interested in hearing if any fedora user has seen this
same problem.
