If you have for example an embedded system that "just" needs x based visualisation (machine control terminal for example), you may not need crypto; in fact, these boxes often don't even have network support at all. OpenSSL is something like 2 MB footprint, which is quite something if you have only 16 or 32 MB flash instead of a harddisk. So being able to work without it is good. rsc -- Dipl.-Ing.
