I found it a bit weird that we were special-casing colormaps in the privates code the same way as we did for screens and devices. As far as I can tell, the xfree86 code is the only thing that needs that, and not for especially good reasons. This series is an attempt to fix that.
If you're like me, PseudoColor modes are actually a bit difficult to test without digging some ancient PCI kit out of storage, and testing 8bpp under qemu would be way easier. If so, you'll almost certainly want 2/4 from the vesa series I just sent, as 8bpp display is quite broken otherwise.
