Any actual reason why the greeter is a shared lib? Did anyone ever develop
alternative greeters? Is it even possible?

As far as I know it's possible, but I don't know if it was ever done, with
those developing alternative UI's like dtlogin & gdm mostly preferring to just
completely fork the source instead.    (CDE's dtlogin contained much of the xdm
sources, I haven't checked gdm or others much.)
