I admit I've been a bad downstream and just added
        pkgconfigdir=/usr/share/pkg-config
to my make flags instead of fixing all the upstream sources, and
am pretty sure I'm not the only distro builder to do so.

(We don't really support cross-compiling, but do have a multilib
 architecture, so /usr/share more cleanly shares them between the
 32-bit and 64-bit build versions.)
