This change should really have been done at an earlier time, and it should probably be backported to the Xserver 1.7 branch.
Dri2 clients need to know whether to request a fake front or not. As of some time ago, the DRI2 server side automatically adds a fake front to window drawables if there previously was none. However, there is currently no way for a client to know whether this feature is present or not.
