I posted the original patch twice(!) on xorg-devel, and committed it
after I didn't receive *any* reaction after a week. Given that the
original issue was pretty severe, I considered committing better than
not committing.

Turned out that the patch introduced a memleak.  This patch reduces the
intrusiveness and (hopefully) removes the memleak, that's why I didn't
discuss this on xorg-devel.

Hope this clearifies things a bit
