I tested this, and it results in the terminal requesting a top-level, committing, setting maximised, getting a configure for the initial toplevel, drawing that, getting a configure for maximised, redrawing again, and finally it works. But that's not your fault: clients/window.c hardcodes it, and it's not really fair to ask you to attack that. Though hey, if you're bored, it would give you a better startup ...
