Yes, Wayland is a distinct project from X.org, but it, and all the work to make it possible, has been done by X developers. It is backwards compatible with X, as you say - through a copy of X. Which is not incompatible with what I said. I've seen a bunch of people panicking. Perhaps you have not read the comments to Mark Shuttleworth's announcement?
