Similar behaviour can be caused by the auto-calibration feature of the BIOS.
If you hold the trackpoint in a fixed position for a moment (most commonly
while scrolling), it will decide that point is the centre. Releasing the
trackpoint will then cause an uncontrolled movement in the opposite direction
until it recalibrates.
By default, the timeout is 0.5s, which is (IME) rather too low and causes
miscalibrations during normal use.
Try writing to /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/drift_time (in units
of 0.1s), and see if it's any better or at least noticeably different. `20`
(2s) seems like a good number for me.
