Actually, I had that in the defaultGraph variable. I suspect that Jena does some query validation and defines aren't a part of that, and that's why it croaks. Another problem is that I need to deal with different query types since there are different exec-methods for different query types. I solved it temporarily by using the endpoint, and it seems the performance penalty isn't disastrous, so I guess I can live with it for now.
