yes this is more like what's in the examples but now i get:
Error 22023

could this be b/c of my kludgy redirects from apache to virtuoso?
curling http://dbtune.org/cmn/resource/WAGN or
http://dbtune.org/cmn/data/WAGN does give the appropriate response as
far as i can tell

Do you have the SPARQL_SPONGE role enabled for SQL USER "SPARQL" ? This
is ROLE isn't granted by default for security reasons.
