I don't know what the original developer was thinking, but I imagine
the difference was deliberate.  They're both useful.  Which behavior
makes more sense to you may not be what makes more sense to someone
else.  Unless there is a problem with the old behavior, other than
the inconvenience of maintaining it, I think it should be restored.
