I don't think that having a terminal in Vim should be taboo. Vim users tend to like using the terminal. Combining the goodness of Vim and the terminal seems very useful. I'd love to run a terminal in Vim window, and switch mode so that the buffer behaves either like a terminal or like a regular buffer, so we can search, copy text (etc) using vim commands in the terminal window.
