This is a simpler pattern that crashes vim: \%(\%(\|a\)*\) but \(\(\|a\)*\) works fine. Also \%(\(\|a\)*\) works fine but \(\%(\|a\)*\) crashes. So there is some problem with the inner \%(\) group.
