It depends profoundly on the Linux.

If you're on a Red Hat based system, I strongly envcourage you to grab
the SRPM content, say mine from
https://github.com/nkadel/subversion-1.8.x-srpm, and make sure that
you *can* build the RPM. with the "make build" command. That will make
sure you have all the dependencies for a fully enabled Subversion
environment.

Then, you can use the relevant source tree, review the "configure"
options, and set a local directory to install it for personal use.
