Two thoughts: Version 1.5. is very old and unsupported these days, you won't get any version specific help anymore. The other thing is, what's the output of svnadmin verify or dump for your backup? If there are no errors printed, your backup seems finde. The difference in size may be because of abandoned transactions and such.
