Cool. I've updated my published tools to build Subversion 1.8.x as RPM's
for RHEL 6 and its like, at:

                 https://github.com/nkadel/subversion-1.8.x-srpm

RHEL 5 doesn't have "libserf" package in EPEL or other public repositories,
so I've not tested it there yet : RHEL 4, I've given up on completely, it's
unsupported by Red HAt anymore and the dependency chain is out of hand.
It's behaving well on my Scientific Linux 6 environment. And yes, it's
weird to publish Subversion packaging on a git repository, but I've some
workflow reasons to do it that way.

I'm also still publishing an updated get-deps.sh at
https://github.com/nkadel/subversion-1.8.x-srpm/blob/master/get-deps.sh,
which our Subversion maintainers are more than welcome to.grab. It';s a bit
more consistent, and handling the necessary new SQLite URL's, which
recently changed naming syntax.
