Only if the disk is connected to a different power source, otherwise it doesn't much matter whether it's killed via data cable or power supply. (Also, this will in most cases only kill the drive electronics; there is still the possibility to have the driver platter to be installed into another drive, by professional recovery services.) But the simplest ist to disconnect the external drive and to use two or three in cycles (if that hadn't been mentioned here), and take the others home or another location different from the servers's.
