This is typically where everyday development is done. I'd switch to a released version or a release branch instead. It doesn't affect the rest of the "environment"/system. Other processes don't pick up the changed settings. Also, the variables are not stored anywhere, so they are effectively volatile. Note that the initial environment is stored somewhere, you can even configure that on a per-user base.
