Assuming you are meaning when connecting through apache then I've also used mod_auth_pam 2.0-1.1.1 and it works really well, once it is patched. I don't believe it is being actively developed at the moment though. The patch improves performance by doing some caching and also allows the application name to be configured as the original sources had hard coded it to 'apache'.
