Yes, first you compile the thing: ./configure --prefix /path/to/folder/for/svn-1.6.9 make install Then, you only need to adjust your PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH so that the other location is found. This is also useful if you don't want to (or can't) install it systemwide (yet). You can install it in your home directory and don't screw up your system in case of mistakes, you don't even need root privileges.
