Hi, 

as the error message says, you cannot check out a single file. The smallest 
unit that can be checked out is a directory. You can either check out the 
parent directory (possibly using sparse checkouts to limit what items you pull) 
or use svn cat -r <rev> <url/to/file>. However, svn cat will not create a 
working copy so you can't check in your changes.
