Tony, If you mean that you see the text "=SUM(xxx:xxx)" displayed instead of the number result then it is likelyi the "Display Formulas" option may be ticked.
To disable the "Display Formulas" option and cause the number result to display... Select "Tools -> Options...:" from the menu Select the "LibreOffice Calc -> View" path from the list of options on the left To the right, under the "Display" options check if "Formulas" is tic'd. If it is, remove the tic. Click "OK". Number results will now be displayed.
