G'day Liz
If you are using Windows OS, have you tried right-clicking the file in Explorer and checking the attributes? If read-only has been selected, you can change that and try again. If you are using a Mac, can't help, sorry.

Open Office,

I am trying to recover a document that (supposedly) was damaged or lost.
Whenever I try to open it, it has a command window asking what language and
what font I want the document to appear as, then it asks whether I want to open
a read-only document or a copy document because an unknown user has blocked my
access to the document. Whenever I select either, it opens a document with 6
pages of hash-tags and no text. I read a lot of help forums online and none of
them helped to fix my problem including restoring the document since the
right-click menu does not have that option. Thanks
