I am also on 1.1.5, and had a look at the MyFaces core source, and it looks fine to me: h:inputText -> HtmlInputText uses HtmlTextRenderer HtmlTextRenderer extends HtmlTextRendererBase HtmlTextRendererBase calls RendererUtils.getStringValue (in shared_impl package) If the component has no submitted value, and is not null, and the converter is not null, and the value is not an instance of string, then the value is converted.
