No, no, don't apologize. Actually we've been using ${project.version} also,
but it stopped working with a certain version of the release plugin. At
that time the "best practice" was changed, since the release plugin was
suddenly capable of adjusting all the version strings and had a new
strategy to handle project interdependencies during prepare. I simply guess
the Sonatype book simply predates this time.
