If your third-party libs have published sources (for the versions you are using/specify in the pom) in the Maven repository, then yes, Maven can acquire them for you.
How "old" is the project? Is it using Maven1 or Maven2 for building? Or is this an old project you are thinking of converting to using Maven as the build tool?
