Difference between compiler plugini and antrun plugin

Can someone tell me the difference between compiler plugin and ant run
plugin (ant also does the source compilation right! ). Also. when we
issue maven install, it will go ahead and compile anyway, in that case
why do we need these commands specifically. I know these very basic
questions.
